Hi elizondoman,
Here's my 2 cents.
Having to choose between a Classic FW (2014-2017) of a STB (2017-2019) is a tough decision. The last classic freewave shape from Fanatic is the best classic they ever made (I had all their shapes since 2005). Fast, turny, exciting ride. The only negative point for me is that it feels smaller underfoot than the previous shape (2010-2013), so there the gap between my FW75 2010 and my FW85 2017 is pretty small.
The FW85 STB is a great board. The most amazing aspect of the board is its comfort: you would expect that the wider tail would make it more sensible to chop, but it isn't. It is more lively underfoot, the perfect board for wave/freestyle riders. But It not the perfect freeride board, the Classic shape is faster. Also, the STB is more prone to spinouts if one pushes too hard on the back foot.
Personally, I prefer the Classic shape for high wind freeride, and the STB for swell riding in the Gorge. It seams to me that the STB is loved by more advanced sailors, while the average Joes like me prefer the Classic shape.
Now, from the feedback I got, the 2020 freewaves are a perfect blend between the two shapes and there is not a single doubt in my head that this new shape will be a killer.
Cheers!
